The Chinese characters spelling Taiwan (.?xƗ) will be available for use in top-level Internet domain names starting from the first quarter of 2009, according to the government-sponsored Taiwan Network Information Center (TWNIC).
Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), a US-based non-profit organization for international management of Internet domain names, has promoted the adoption of non-English domain names since 2000, TWNIC indicated. As a result, 11 non-English languages, including traditional Chinese used in Taiwan, will be available for use as top-level domain names from the first quarter of 2009, TWNIC pointed out.
The registration of .?xƗ will be initially available for existing enterprises and trademarks only during the first three months of its rollout, and then can be used for registration then by individuals, TWNIC indicated. The 3-month restriction is to prevent speculation by individuals, TWNIC pointed out.
There are about 400,000 Internet domain names registered in Taiwan at present, and 60,000 or 15% of them use the .tw domain extension, while using Chinese characters for sub-domains, TWNIC indicated.
