Skype VPN network Thu Jul 21, 2005 8:55 am (GMT 0)

Here's an idea for a Skype add-on. I have only thought thru the user interface/operation of the feature, not the technical implementation.

A Skype VPN, call it SkyPN or whatever...

How it should work:

From a Skype perspective:
1) The task-tray "change status" menu will have a "Enable VPN" item
2) I can send an authorization request (similar to adding contacts) to any of my accepted contacts to ask for VPN access.
3) Once one of my contacts has accepted a VPN request, anytime both he and I have our "Enable VPN" status ticked, the SkyPN will connect.

From a Windows perspective:
1) SkyPN will add a virtual network adapter (as per VMWare, etc) to my system
2) I can assign any IP address to this adapter (Setup may suggest one?)
3) SkyPN will manage all connected clients, and automatically assign them IP addresses in the same range as my virtual adapter, thereby creating a virtual network of all connected clients. Note that the automatically assigned IP address will be from my point of view only - each remote client will have its own virtual network.
4) I should then be able to browse this virtual network of SkyPN clients as if they were on a independent local LAN.

I think this would be great for any community of broadband users, possibly even for LAN gaming?

How about it?
